Yamanashi's soil is some of the richest in Japan — precision manufacturing, fruit, wine, water, and 750 years of pilgrimage at Minobusan. It is also emptying: the prefecture projects a fall below 750,000 people by 2030 and a labour force down 61.7% by 2100.
Deep in that ground is the Akebono soybean — national Geographical Indication №119, 1.6× the size of a standard soybean, grown on 28 hectares by 141 producers. Plant it anywhere else and within three seasons it reverts. It can only exist here.
NUHAUS is a seed of the same kind: a creative residency planted in Minobu, grown among the farmers, temples and machine shops of Yamanashi. Like the bean, it only works here.
